On the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the war, a number of commemorative events were held in Germany and Tanzania through the initiative of civil society, academia and religions. From the state side, there was vanishingly little initiative in both countries. Here are some examples of non-governmental commemorative events in Germany
- November 4-6, 2005: Conference "Water against bullets: 100 years of Maji-Maji" in Wuppertal (among others Tanzania-Network.de e.V.
- November 11-12, 2005: Conference "With Magic Water against Bullets - The Maji-Maji Uprising in former German East Africa 100 Years Ago" in Berlin (Berliner Missionswerk and the Berlin Society for Mission History)
- 13. November 2005: Commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Maji-Maji War in Berlin (Tanzania-Network.de e.V. in cooperation with the Berliner Entwicklungspolitischer Ratschlag BER)
In the context of the anniversary we (DEPO Germany Postcolonial e.V. and Tanzania-Network.de e.V.) created a reader for the Committee for Economic Cooperation and Development of the German Bundestag and formulated the "Wuppertal Declaration" with friendly organizations. In our HABARI magazine "Commemoration of the Maji-Maji War" (4/2005), various Tanzanian and German experts gave their assessment of the events. There you can also read reports about different commemorative events and various greetings: The magazine can be downloaded free of charge here (pdf).
