Seminar: Urban, Rural and In Between – Dreams and Lived Realities in Tanzania
How do urban, rural, small-town and peri-urban realities differ in Tanzania – and how are they interconnected? What role do digitalisation and technological innovations play? How does climate change affect urban and rural areas differently? Are there differences in political participation and civic engagement?
Our seminar “Urban, Rural and In Between – Dreams and Realities in Tanzania”, taking place on 24 October 2026 in Würzburg, explores these and other questions. Together with speakers from Tanzania and Germany, we want to develop a more complex understanding of the diverse interconnections between urban and rural spaces.

Together, we will explore and discuss how global challenges affect urban and rural areas differently and what locally developed approaches and solutions are emerging.
15:10 Discussion Panel: Civil Society & Political Participation
The seminar will conclude with a discussion with guests from Tanzania on current political developments. Among other things, we will discuss the role of urban and rural areas in political participation, protest movements and civic engagement.

On Sunday, October 25, at 10 a.m., there will be a guided decolonial city tour through Würzburg (approx. two hours). The contribution is about €7.50 per person. If you are interested, please indicate this on the registration form, as places are limited.
