In 2026, under the title ‘Life Prospects in Tanzania – Desire and Reality’, we will address the question of how people in Tanzania can shape their own future under the given social, political and economic conditions – and what global contexts influence or restrict this.

The next issue (01/2026) will focus on the topic of ‘family’:

Around the world, families have a decisive influence on the values, everyday lives and future decisions of their members. In Tanzania, unlike the German understanding of the nuclear family, family is a broad family network that also functions as a social safety net. State social security systems and care services are virtually non-existent. Families therefore take on key social functions, such as raising children, caring for the elderly and providing economic security.

At the same time, families are under considerable pressure: economic constraints, migration, urbanisation and social change, as well as digital influences, are transforming family life and presenting its members with new challenges. What happens when older people can no longer be cared for by their children due to changing realities of life, for example because their children have moved to the cities to work? Migration is increasingly shaping everyday life in many Tanzanian families: one parent often works far away, children live with relatives in the city to go to school there or later to work or study abroad. Education is highly valued, and many families invest large sums in their children's education. However, given the high youth unemployment rate – even among well-educated young people – questions are often raised as to whether this investment is worthwhile in the long term. This is because not only access to education but also to healthcare is closely linked to the family's economic opportunities. At the same time, many children actively contribute to the family income – especially in rural areas, where they are often indispensable as workers.

The magazine highlights the diversity of family life in Tanzania, focusing on family images as well as economic and social roles, and asks how families are changing amid the tensions between tradition, mobility and social change – and what impact these changes are having on people's life prospects.
