Tanzania-NetTalk: What Does the Withdrawal of USAID Mean for Tanzania?
May 22nd 2025, 6 pm CET, 7 pm EAT
The freezing of funds from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) by US President Donald Trump, along with the announcement of its dissolution and integration into the State Department as of July 1, has far-reaching consequences worldwide. In Tanzania, many programs have been suspended, while some continue to operate — but the situation remains highly unclear. This NetTalk aims to shed light on the situation.
We will discuss the current situation and the impact of the funding withdrawal on NGOs, healthcare, and civil society in Tanzania with our interview partners Richard Ngilangwa and James Kasindi of the Economic and Social Research Foundation, authors of "Reflections on U.S. Foreign Aid Shift: Lessons for Tanzania's Economic and Policy Adaptation,"as well as development workers Hekela Charles and Ezekiel Mgaya, who have expertise in reproductive health and HIV services in the Njombe region.
Discussion points:
• Which areas does/did USAID focus on in Tanzania?
• What are the consequences of the withdrawal for NGOs, civil society, and healthcare?
• What does it mean specifically for the supply of HIV medication?
• Which international actors and donor countries could step in to close the funding gaps?
• What opportunities might arise from USAID’s withdrawal, and what possible future scenarios exist?
An event by Tanzania Network e.V.
The NetTalk will be in English
