The General Elections in Tanzania on October 29, 2025, have deeply shaken the country and the self-understanding of many Tanzanians, and it has left people worried both in Tanzania and abroad. Nationwide protests were met with extreme violence by security forces. Human rights organizations report countless deaths, arrests, and cases of torture. A curfew was put in place, and the internet was shut down, leaving many people unable to contact their families for days.
The government said the protests were caused by foreign-controlled youth rioters and suggested that the role of NGOs should be investigated. More nationwide protests are announced for Independence Day on December 9, 2025, and the government has warned of a strong response.
These events have caused concern not only among Tanzanians and the Tanzanian Diaspora worldwide, but also among people with personal and professional connections to Tanzania. Many are asking:
Where is Tanzania heading politically and socially?
What might happen next?
With this NetTalk we would like to shed light on:
- The perspective of civil society and Churches
- Personal experiences of people from the Tanzanian Diaspora
- The social impact of the protests
- The broader political and economic context and impacts
Our guests:
- Dr. Elizabeth Silayo, Pastor and VEM staff member
- Yoram Karusya, Pastor and VEM staff member
- Dr. Thabit Jacob, Senior Expert in Political Economy and Development from the University of Lund
