Zur Einstimmung auf unsere Online-Seminarreihe zum Thema “Tourismus” sprachen wir in einem NetTalk mit den tansanischen Gästen Dr. Delphine Kessy (Wissenschaftlerin an der St. Augustine University Mwanza) und Sairis Bugeraha (Gründerin der Tanzania Association for Sustainable Cultural Tourism- TASUCT) über den Dokumentarfilm "The Royal Tour Tanzania".
„The Royal Tour“ ist eine Hochglanz-Dokureihe des US-amerikanischen Filmemachers Peter Greenberg. In der Folge zu Tansania begleitet er Präsidentin Samia Suluhu Hassan auf eine Tour quer durchs Land und besucht mir ihr die touristischen Highlights: Von Sansibar über Pemba bis hin zum Kilimanjaro und in die Serengeti. Nach seinem Launch im April 2022 wurde der Film in den Sozialen Medien kontrovers diskutiert. Wir sprachen mit unseren Gästen über die Ziele und Wirkungen des Films und über die Frage, welche positiven und negativen Seiten der Tourismus für Natur und Communities hat und ob Massentourismus mit ökologischer und sozialer Nachhaltigkeit vereinbar ist.

As a prelude to our online seminar series on "Tourism", we had been talking with our Tanzanian guests Dr. Delphine Kessy (scholar at St. Augustine University) and Sairis Bugeraha (Founder of Tanzania Association of Sustainable Cultural Tourism - TASUCT) about the documentary film "The Royal Tour Tanzania" in a NetTalk.
"The Royal Tour" is a travel documentary series by US filmmaker Peter Greenberg. In his Tanzania episode, he accompanies President Samia Suluhu Hassan on a tour across the country. Tanzania’s most popular touristic highlights are featured: From Zanzibar to Pemba, from Kilimanjaro to Serengeti. After its launch in April 2022, the film was the subject of controversial discussions on social media.
We talked with our guests about the film's goals, the positive and negative impacts that tourism has on nature and communities and whether mass tourism is compatible with environmental and social sustainability.
